Why every daughter needs to see her mother NAKED, according to one body image campaigner (and other women say they agree)

Just this morning my eight-year-old daughter watched me walk naked from the bathroom to my bedroom. Pointing at my tummy she asked: Mummy, why does that wobble so much?

Taryn Brumfitt wants every woman to love their body. The Adelaide-based filmmaker made headlines around the world when she posted a non-traditional before-and-after photo – sparking an important conversation and spurring her on to create ground breaking body positivity documentary Embrace. Now an author and public speaker, Taryn is founder of the body image movement – an organisation with a mission to help people everywhere disregard the negative messages we’re bombarded with and truly appreciate our bodies for everything they allow us to achieve.

After having three children, I thought that the only option to fix my “broken” body was to have cosmetic surgery. What I didn’t realise at the time was that it wasn’t my body that needed to change; it was my perspective. A few weeks before the surgery I was watching my daughter Mikaela playing in front of me and I had a profound epiphany. I thought: “How am I going to teach Mikaela to love her body if I can’t love my own?”.

One woman’s quest to get us all to love our bodies more

Taryn Brumfitt is on a crusade to help woman love their bodies more. It all started almost four years ago, when she gained international attention after posting a before-and-after photo on Facebook that was anything but traditional. We’ll get to that in second.

Taryn loved being pregnant, but after the birth of her third child she became obsessed with getting back to her pre-baby body. She eventually decided to have surgery—liposuction and breast implants—but right before the procedures were scheduled, Taryn backed out.

We all know the way before and after pictures are supposed to work. The first is the one which made you think “enough” – the one with the spare tire or the double chin which you can’t explain away as an unflattering angle.

The second is the result of months of self-denial, dieting and gym sessions, a hard-fought victory usually fuelled by that before picture stuck on the fridge door, staring you down.

in Women’s Leadership

Taryn Brumfitt has today been awarded the 2018 SA Award for Excellence in Women’s Leadership by Women and Leadership Australia (WLA). The award recognises the contribution of an individual in elevating the visibility and importance of Australian women receiving equitable access to higher levels of leadership across all industries and organisations.

Brumfitt is the founder of the Body Image Movement, a global movement that has reached over 100 million people, designed to encourage women to love their bodies. She has overcome her own crippling body image issues through changing her attitude towards herself, and has spent the last few years on a quest to end the global body-hating epidemic and working to spread the message of body loving.

Taryn Brumfitt graced the Business Chicks stage with a seven-city tour across Australia.

She touched down in the Gold Coast, Perth, Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Melbourne and Sydney and danced the conga with thousands of women in sold out audiences.
